What's behind the name
What's behind the name
Melissae (Μέλισσαι) means "the bees." In Greek myth, the Melissae were bee-nymphs and priestesses: melissa is the word for honeybee, and the title was given to the priestesses of Demeter and to the nymphs who, in one tale, nursed the infant Zeus on honey. The bee stood for industry, purity, and community — and the hive was the ancient world's model of a well-ordered household, each part working for the whole and drawing sweetness from the flower to share.
That is the spirit we have named ourselves for. Melissae brings the hive's honest goods into the home: nothing synthetic, nothing wasted, a little of that golden order carried into everyday ritual.
